New support group for addicts and families

PREVENTING Addiction Larne (PAL) is to host a weekly support group at Gloucester Park Day Centre.

From next Thursday (October 27) the informal 7-9pm sessions will be open to anyone with addiction issues, as well as family members and carers.

PAL was formed to help address increasing concerns about the effects of substance abuse on individuals, families and the wider community.

The community-based group wants the sessions to be welcoming and non-judgmental, while stressing that they will be entirely confidential.

“Will offer support to anyone affected by substance abuse, mental health issues, suicide or behavioural problems caused by classified or prescription drugs, alcohol or other substances,” said PAL spokesperson Beverley White.

People have told us they want to be able to talk about their issues in an informal setting, over a cup of tea or coffee. It can really help to talk to other people with the same needs,” she added.

PAL sees the support group as an important step towards its goal, which is to provide a full-time drop-in centre for addicts and families in Larne.

At present PAL is not in a position to offer counselling, but Beverley said: “We can point people in the direction of counselling if required.”
