New support service for former security force members

FORMER members of the security forces from Carrick are set to benefit from a new outreach programme.

The NI Phoenix Project - which was launched after receiving 1.2 million of funding from EU Peace III - aims to support former members of the army, police and prison officers who served during the Troubles, or Operation Banner as it was known. The project offers services such as welfare advice, counselling, befriending, the opportunity to learn new skills, and also provides support to family members.

The first of six Phoenix groups throughout the province was launched in Newtownards recently, and chairman David Crabbe said its outreach programme would reach as far as Carrickfergus.

He added that one of the strengths of the programme was that it was not necessary for members to attend meetings to access the services, and he encouraged all those eligible to register.

“This unique project will not only help to plug the gap in much needed service provision, but it will also go a long way towards helping to obtain proper recognition for the needs of those who served all to help bring peace and normality back to our society,” he said. “We particularly look forward to addressing issues for those many former security force members living in the Carrickfergus area. We want to build confidence and trust in a way that will help these people to overcome barriers or perceived barriers to enable them to come out of social isolation and have an active role in society whilst at the same time addressing physical and psychological needs.”

The outreach programme will involve presentations in Carrick and will provide clinics for welfare advice and information as required. Ards and North Down Phoenix Group have their premises in The Mall, Frances Street, Newtownards, and provide a reception/drop-in centre for free tea and coffee. It is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm

Development officer Mitch Bresland said that the aim was to have a Phoenix Group set up in the Carrickfergus area when it comes to the next funding opportunity. Registration for the project can be through a group or as an individual, and the development worker is available for presentations. Non members of the group can also participate by becoming volunteers.
