New Temple roundabout is welcomed

Over the years the crossroads have become notorious, with accidents occurring on a regular basis, many of which were fatal.

The project is expected to cost in the region of £250,000 and it is hoped it will be completed by 2016.

The Minister confirmed in the Assembly that he has asked officials to bring this scheme forward as quickly as possible, subject to the satisfactory completion of the various statutory processes, including the vesting order, direction order and tendering process.

“My Department is continuing to progress this scheme and has recently begun discussions with affected landowners to agree accommodation works,” said Mr Kennedy.

“The scheme remains a high priority however like all schemes being progressed, is subject to the availability of the necessary land and funding.

“I am aware of the support among local residents and road users for the introduction of safety improvements at this busy junction, known locally as Temple Crossroads.

“The need for improvements was identified through a Route Improvement Study carried out by my Department.“A number of options have been considered.

“The preferred option is to construct a new four-leg roundabout to provide easier and safer access to, from and across the A24 Ballynahinch Road, where it meets the B6 Saintfield Road.”

Lagan Valley MLA Jonathan Craig and Downshire Councillor Uel Mackin have welcomed news that plans that plans are at an advanced stage to improve traffic movement at the junction of A24 and B6 roads at Temple.

Speaking on the Minister’s answer, Mr Craig said the detailed reply from the Minister outlined the fact that his department had considered several options to improve this very dangerous road junction.

“I was particularly pleased to learn that the Minister decided on this option which will include the provision of a new roundabout and improve road safety at this junction,” said Mr Craig.

Councillor Uel Mackin said he too was delighted with the move.

He added: “I am very pleased that the project is firmly in the Departments plans for action.

“The £250,000 project will be progressed in the coming months with regard to land ownership issues, layout design and awarding the contract with an anticipated completion by 2016.”
