New Town Clerk appointed...at last

MAYOR Alderman Maurice Devenney has welcomed the appointment of Ms Sharon O’Connor as the Chief Executive and Town Clerk of Derry City Council.

Ms O’Connor has been appointed to succeed Mrs Valerie Watts, who took up a new position in Scotland earlier in the year. Ms O ‘Connor is currently the Director of Development with Down District Council and is expected to take up her new role in the coming months.

Expressing delight at the new appointment, the Mayor Alderman Maurice Devenney said he looked forward to working with Ms O’Connor. “Sharon O’Connor has the full support of Council and I am looking forward to working with her in the future.”

Ms O’Connor is a business and local government professional with over twenty five years experience. She is the Director of Development with Down District Council since 2000.

Her non-executive experience includes Arts Council NI and the BBC Broadcasting Council in Northern Ireland. Prior to working in local government she ran her own successful business and also has an extensive background in the community and voluntary sectors.

A graduate of the University of Ulster with an MA she also holds a range of professional qualifications including Marketing and Personnel. She was the first local government person to achieve Chartered Director status and was named the NI Public Sector Director of the Year 09/10.

Expressing delight at her appointment, Ms O’Connor said she was looking forward to taking up the position with Derry City Council.
