New young adult care

A NEW day care centre for young adults with learning disability has been opened in Londonderry.

The Oak Tree centre in Creggan was officially opened last week.

It is a replacement for the former Greenhaw centre which was relocated to the Evergreen centre on the grounds of Gransha Hospital in the Waterside area of the city in 2009.

SDLP MP Mr Durkan, who lobbied the Health Minister Michael McGimpsey and the Western Trust to relocate the group back to the cityside said: "I am delighted that the families and carers of the Greenhaw centre have secured this excellent new facility from which the group can be based in future.

"Last year the Minister and Trust confirmed to me that it viewed the Evergreen centre as only an interim location for the group and I was therefore heartened by their assurances that they were actively exploring options for relocating the group back across the river – which was the expressed will of the users and their families.

"It is great that staff, families and the young people themselves now have a new home and that this excellent group can continue with its quality programme of activities and care."
