Newbuildings United reachsemi-final

NEWBUILDINGS Utd reached the semi-finals of the North West Craig Memorial cup for the first time with an excellent one nil away win at Magherafelt.

With the match played on a bumpy surface both sides found it hard to get a passing rythm going and clear-cut chances were few and far between although the away side looked more threatening with the pace of Curry and Robinson on the flanks and Magherafelt relying on set pieces to cause any trouble to their opponents.

With the game at stalemate and extra time looming Wes Ferguson palyed a defence splitting pass to Gregory McIvor who broke through, only to be tackled by the Magherafelt defender who could only watch as the ball took off past the onrushing keeper and into the back of the net.

With a minute to go the home side threw caution to the wind but their cause wasnt helped when their captain was sent off for two bookable offences.

The Newbuildings rearguard held firm to record a good victory. It was a geat all-round performance but a special mention must go to Brian Scanlon who picked up the Newbuildings Man of the Match award for his tireless workrate in midfield. Newbuildings will now play either Limavady, Tobermore or Moyola in the semi-finals.
