The key objectives of the programme are to regenerate the shopping areas through refurbishment of properties. Work ill also include repairs to existing frontages and the development of a unique brand to promote the area as a destination for shoppers and to improve the overall attractiveness of the area.

Following the announcement from the Minister for Social Development (DSD) that funding has been made available for the Revitalise Programme for the Coleraine area, Coleraine Borough Council is reminding applicants that the closing date is fast approaching. The Department has allocated £250k which will enable a focus on enhancing both the Waterside area and Bridge Street.

The DSD funded programme is the first major activity in relation to the Coleraine Town Centre Master plan which was launched last year. The Coleraine Revitalise programme is currently managed by a local Project Steering Group consisting of representatives of local trade and Council members, facilitated by Julienne Elliott, Coleraine Borough Council Economic Development officer responsible for town management.

Julienne Elliott commented; “I would encourage all businesses or property owners in the designated areas to get involved in this opportunity to refurbish their premises.

“ Waterside and Bridge Street are noted for their historic buildings and it is hoped through this scheme we can enhance those unique characteristics for the area. Part of the funding has been set aside to provide a marketing and promotion programme for the area which will include activities to complement the refurbishment work and encourage everyone to visit.

“These improvements include plaster work, woodwork, gutters and down pipes. Other works including painting and shop signage are also permitted, but other suggestions for refurbishment works will be considered.

“All businesses in the designated area have been sent an application pack and Council is keen to see applications.”
