The centre, based at Ballyclare Presbyterian Church on the Doagh Road, opened its doors in August last year, and since then it has provided food supplies for 147 adults and 131 children.

The foodbank, which is run by a team of volunteers from various churches in the area, is open every Thursday from 2.30pm – 5pm.

“The Ballyclare distribution centre draws food from the main warehouse at Carnmoney Presbyterian Church and makes it available to people across the community,” explained Deaconess, Michele Purdy. “This ensures that people living in the communities around Ballyclare will not have to travel to the main distribution centre at Carnmoney to exchange their food vouchers.

“People who come to the foodbank centre are assured of a warm welcome, a cup of tea or coffee, a space for children to play all within a friendly, relaxing environment. There is an opportunity to talk with one of the volunteers and to look at ways in which additional support can be provided, all within the strictest confidence,” she added.

Food is issued on receipt of a voucher, which can be obtained from referral agencies such as a social worker, health visitor, church minister or doctor. Vouchers are also available form Citizens Advice Bureau, Danny Kinahan’s office and some schools.

Vouchers can be redeemed at Carnmoney Presbyterian Church each Monday 2pm – 4pm or Wednesday 6.30pm – 8.30pm; Abbots Cross Presbyterian Church each Tuesday 10am – noon or Thursday 6.30pm - 8.30pm; Greencastle Methodist Church each Tuesday 6.30pm - 8pm.
