Next generation of Trimble family joins political world

Nicholas Trimble, who is following in the footsteps of his Noble Peace Prize winning father, was co-opted onto the council this week after a seat was left vacant when Robbie Butler was elected to the Stormont Assembly.

Outgoing Deputy Mayor Councillor Alexander Redpath has moved to fill Mr Butler’s vacant seat in the Killultagh ward, and Mr Trimble will fill Mr Redpath’s seat in Downshire West.

“I’m delighted to join the Ulster Unionist Party Group on Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council and I am looking forward to taking up the post,” said Mr Trimble. “Although public opinion doesn’t appear to hold politicians in the highest regard, I am looking forward to the challenges of re-engaging with the public and helping restore confidence in their local representation.”

Alderman Michael Henderson MBE, Ulster Unionist Group Leader on Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council, welcomed Mr Trimble to the council. “I welcome Councillor Nicholas Trimble who brings with him knowledge of his DEA and a young person’s view on a range of different subjects,” he said.

“Nicky will be representing the electorate on two of the Council’s committees; the Leisure Committee and the Environment Committee, two very important bodies and I know he is ready for the challenge.”

Councillor Alexander Redpath said he was delighted to have Mr Trimble on the team.

“I am delighted that Nicholas has been selected to fill my seat,” he said. “Nicholas campaigned very hard for me during the council and Westminster elections. He is intimately familiar with Downshire West and the issues that I’ve been working on in the area since my election.

“Nicholas will be a diligent and hardworking councillor for all the people of Downshire West. He is a man of considerable ability and will add enormously to the Ulster Unionist group on Lisburn and Castlereagh Council.”
