NHS campaigners drum up support in Glengormley

As part of The People’s NHS campaign, a number of activists staged a public demonstration in Ballyhenry on Thursday, January 29.

Despite the wintry weather conditions, they did their best to raise awareness of the campaign by holding up placards carrying slogans such as ‘NHS Not For Sale’ and ‘Defending Our Health Service’.

“We are very concerned that as part of the Trans-Atlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) EU-US trade deal negotiations, parts of the NHS will be sold off to private firms, opening up tendering of clinical services to US healthcare corporations,” explained The People’s NHSni campaign spokesperson, Rev Chris Hudson.

Following previous demonstrations in parts of Belfast and Lagan Valley late last year, the campaign is now being rolled out to other areas of Northern Ireland.

The People’s NHSni activists have been canvassing residents in the Ballyhenry, Richmond and Glenvarna areas of Newtownabbey, urging them to sign the anti-privatisation petition and to encourage them to place signage indicating their support for the NHS.

“We are asking politicians to support our demands for a clear and comprehensive exemption from TTIP for the NHS,” Rev Hudson added.
