Nice terror attack: '˜Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of France'

The Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Cllr John Scott, has expressed his sympathies to the victims of last night's sickening terror attack in Nice.

More than 80 people were killed and hundreds more injured when a French-Tunisian man drove a lorry into crowds of people at a Bastille Day celebration.

Cllr Scott, who followed live news reports of the tragic events in the southern French city throughout the night, described the attack as “despicable.”

“It’s so, so sad what has happened. It is just absolutely terrible.

“The thoughts and prayers of the people of Antrim and Newtownabbey are with the people of Nice and the people of France at this awful time,” he said.

The Macedon representative, whose granddaughter is on holiday in France, added: “Thankfully she’s not in that area, but it just makes you think what could have happened. It’s just awful.

“My sympathies go to the family and friends of those who have been killed and my thoughts and prayers are with the many who have been injured in this despicable attack.”

The Mayor is due to open books of condolence at Mossley Mill and Antrim Civic Centre this afternoon.

Reacting to the shocking news of the Nice attack, Ballyclare Councillor David Arthurs posted on Facebook: “This morning our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Nice and their families. Once again we have seen how ruthless these terrorists are. 84 people killed including many children whilst enjoying a fireworks display. #prayfornice.”

Alderman Pamela Barr tweeted: “Such horror in Nice. Let’s stand in sympathy and solidarity with all those affected.”
