Nicki teams up with gran for fundraiser

Nicki Browne, who just started her first year of high school last week, had thought the idea of organising a coffee morning for charity sounded like fun and so her grandmother Lyn Hinds agreed to help.

Mum Sharon Hinds said: “Nicki’s grandad had been unwell and I think in a way because of this, Nicki felt she just wanted to give something back”.

“She always enjoyed baking and is a good cook too - she often cooks on her own and makes us dinners.”

Nicki said: “I’d wanted to have a coffee morning for a while now and so my Gran agreed to let me hold it in her house and helped me to make the buns.

“I’ve loved baking ever since I was little and my gran always baked with me.”

Nicki had organised a variety of special treats for everyone from rice crispie buns, 15’s and mars bar crispie buns right through to a chocolate cake made by auntie Rosie.

“There were all different sorts of buns,” said Nicki, who took her inspiration from a cookery book that a friend had put together.

“We have a wee cooking book at home - it’s just a small one - but someone we know made it, and it has lots of different recipes in it.”

Nicki was delighted when so many people came along to sample her baking.

“Almost all of the neighbours turned out to support us and some of them even said to us how nice it is to have a wee get-together.”

At first Nicki wasn’t sure which charity to support so her mum gave her several ideas, but it was the Children’s Hospice that she chose.

“I think she decided to go for the Children’s Hospice as she is still just a child herself,” said Sharon.

The team were really pleased with the way things went.

Proud of her daughter Nicki, Sharon said: “It was really successful and a lovely morning.”
