Night of violence in Strabane

A 25-year-old man has been beaten and shot in Strabane in the early hours of Sunday morning.

It has emerged Brendan McCafferty, originally from Londonderry, moved from the city some tome ago after being threatened by republican vigilante group RAAD.

At around midnight the front door of his home was forced open and two masked men entered the bedroom where he and his partner where.

The victim was beaten with a wooden bat as he lay in bed. Another man fired a number of shots from a handgun hitting the victim in an arm and leg. His girlfriend, also in her 20's, was struck on the head during the attack. Both were later taken to hospital.

And, at around 1am on Sunday morning a car was damaged in a suspected pipe-bomb attack at O'Nolan Park in the town.

People living close to the scene were evacuated from their homes whilst Army bomb disposal experts examined the vehicle.

There were no reports of any injuries. The alert has now ended and residents have now returned to their homes.
