Night timeengineering work planned for railway

Translink has advised households situated close to Lisburn Train Station that essential rail engineering work will be carried out at the facility from December 1 – 19.

The work is required to maintain rail network safety levels and will involve the upgrade and renewal of signalling and telecoms cabling infrastructure.

Translink Southern Route Manager Gerard McAtarsney says on-track machinery and generators will be used so for health and safety reasons the work will need to be completed at night.

“While we do not envisage any excessive noise, we are mindful of how close some local residents live in relation to the facility.

“We expect to complete the main works within the first week and finish the upgrade project by December 19,” said Gerard.

“We will work hard with our contractors to complete this work as quickly as possible, keeping any noise to a minimum.

“We would ask for residents’ patience and support as we work hard to maintain local rail services.”

Lisburn Councillor Alexander Redpath said he hoped disruption would be kept to a minimum.

“I have spoken directly with Translink regarding these works and I am seeking specific details about the anticipated level of noise and light required to undertake these works,” said Mr Redpath. “I have been given assurances that disruption will be kept to a minimum.

“Sadly, these works are necessary for the safety of passengers using the rail network.

“Given the reliance of commuters on rail services these works have to be carried out when the line is not in use. Passenger numbers are at record highs across Northern Ireland Railways, including in Lisburn. The anticipated opening of a station at Knockmore with park and ride facilities will likely further increase passenger numbers.

“If residents are experiencing unreasonable disruption please contact me immediately and I will be in touch with Translink to ensure concerns are taken on board.”
