Nine goals for 10s

LURGAN Town Under 10s notched a resounding nine goal victory over St Mary's at the weekend.

Matthew Strain broke the deadlock with an excellent low strike across the keeper.

Another quickly followed with Callum Ferris instinctively hooking a bouncing ball over his shoulder and the St Mary’s keeper to loop it into the net.

The game really opened up for Lurgan after this and good work in midfield from Adam and Conor saw the ball break for Ewan Buchanan who took one look up and finished high into the net to give the keeper no chance at his near post.

Town finished the half much the stronger side with Callum grabbing his second of the half.

St Mary’s got a goal early in the second period to remind Town that the game was by no means over.

James and Simon really closed things down well at the back on the few occasions that Lurgan came under attack and the movement and passing in midfield between Adam, Conor, Cai, Ryan and Callum ensured St Mary’s wouldn’t recover. The remainder of the half belonged to Callum who helped himself to another four goals to round off a superb individual performance.

The first was a volley high into the net after Lurgan worked the ball brilliantly down the right wing and the second, and his last of the day, was a sublime dink over the keeper from three yards to take the score to 8-1 in Town’s favour.

The final goal of a superb 9-1 victory fell to Joshua Pugh who finished well from close distance after Callum had unselfishly squared the ball after drawing the keeper.

Given the quality of the team performance it was difficult to single-out one player, but Russell’s player of the day for the second consecutive week was Callum Ferris for notching his six goals, which in no small part were down to his continued improved work rate, individual skill and his team-mates excellent passing.
