Nine years on: Moffatt family appeal for new information

THE family of murdered Coleraine pensioner, Norman Moffatt, have issued a fresh appeal for information on the ninth anniversary his death.

The 73-year-old (pictured) left his Circular Road home at 6.30am on January 26, 2001, to buy a newspaper.

Twenty minutes later, he stumbled back into his house clutching his side after being stabbed.

He was rushed into hospital but died weeks later.

Norman's daughter, Norma, told The Coleraine Times on Friday, "For us as a family it is very frustrating.

"No one has ever been brought to justice for the murder of my father.

"It is now nine years on, and we still have no answers."

Four years after his death, in December 2005 detectives re-visited the murder scene.

Further searches and interviews took place, and a mobile police station was brought to Railway Road, to see if residents or passers by could offer any new information. But no one has ever been brought before the courts.

BBC's Crimewatch also staged a reconstruction in April 2006.

Police believe that Mr Moffatt was killed, in a case of mistaken identity, and that the intended victim may have been a local paedophile, who lived in the area at the time.

The Detective Chief Inspector at the time of the murder, Nigel Kyle, said Mr Moffatt was a 'man with no enemies'

He described the crime as a 'reckless and impulsive act', and added: "I don't believe the killer left his home planning events to turn out this way.

"He returned home, and I have no doubt reflected on what he had done.

"He will have spoken to someone, a friend or partner. Someone may remember a person behaving strangely on that morning or in the days that followed."

East Londonderry MP, Gregory Campbell visited the Moffatt home on Friday.

He said: "Nine years have passed since this fatal attack, yet there remains no breakthrough in finding Mr Moffatt's killer.

"I join with Mr Moffatt's family in appealing to anyone in the community with information surrounding the murder to come forward to Police.

"Any information, however small it might seem, may assist in progressing the investigation, so that the person who murdered Norman Moffatt can face the justice they deserve."
