No barriers to Christmas!

Town centre streets will be virtually barrier free from next week when a moratorium on the Public Realm works starts.

The temporary stoppage to the £4m scheme aimed at changing the streetscape of four main thoroughfares

will start on Monday, November 16, with works restarting in early January.

Updating councillors on the scheme at their November monthly meeting, Council CEO Anne Donaghy, pointed out that during the moratorium all barriers would be removed from the streets, except where there was a health & safety requirement, “to support the traders for maximum Christmas business”.

It would also allow the professional team and Council officers to review processes and procedures with the contractor moving forward, she added.

The Ballymena scheme consists of four main streets (Wellington Street, Ballymoney Street, Church Street and Broughshane Street) broken down into four sections per street, known as ABC and D.

Mrs Donaghy pointed out that while it was Council’s preference that all special finishes, such as corner kerbs, would be installed before any further excavation in January for Section Cs, it would be ‘unlikely’ that the special finishes will be installed in both Sections A and B before the moratorium gets underway on Monday.
