No change in parking fees planned - as yet

The new Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Supercouncil has now taken over responsibility for the town’s car parks.

As the new owners of the car parks, they are now responsible for setting tariffs, lighting and the upkeep of the car parks.

Patrons of the car parks should note local car park signage and Council websites for information on tariffs.

So far no changes are planned for tariffs - with the ‘MAIL’ specifically asking on the fate of the five hours for £1 tariff.

A Transport NI spokesman said: “Drivers are still expected to park properly and where applicable, pay the appropriate tariff in the charged car parks.

“NSL traffic attendants will continue to patrol the car parks as normal and issue Penalty Charge Notices to illegally parked vehicles.”

People can continue to use the telephone cashless parking system, Parkmobile where you can register and phone 028 9575 7988 to avoid your parking time expiring.

Provincewide drivers should not notice any changes. The transfer excludes Park and Ride sites which will continue to be looked after by DRD.

A council spokesperson said : “Armagh City Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council has agreed to continue with the £1 for five hours charge in respect of those car parks where charges were previously in place. There are no plans at this stage to change the status of the existing free car parks.

“TransportNI will continue to be responsible for the Park and Ride car park at Lough Road, Lurgan. The car parks at Wesley Place, Lurgan and Wilson Street, Portadown were recently re-designated as Park and Ride car parks and, whilst discussions are ongoing in relation to these, they will not be the responsibility of Council at this stage.”
