No claims mix up leads to court

While changing insurance companies a mix-up over a no claims bonus meant that a Lurgan woman was not insured when stopped by police on May 24 last year.

Natalie Millar (45), Allenhill Drive, Lurgan, was fined £175 last Friday at Craigavon Magistrates Court for not having insurance. She was also given six points.

She was stopped by police at 9.50pm on the Annesborough Road, Lurgan, and checks revealed that the car was registered to her but it was not insured.

She was asked to produce her insurance but because her no claims bonus had not been sent to her insurance company the policy was not valid.

A barrister representing the defendant said the defendant was changing insurance companies and a direct debit had been set up. She added the policy was cancelled because the no claims bonus had not been forwarded. An email sent to her about this could have gone into junk mail.

The direct debit was only £20 a month, the lawyer added, and her client did not realise it was not going out of her account.

She said the vehicle needed some repairs and when it was roadworthy the defendant got a new policy of insurance. It was a genuine oversight.
