No Dark Hedges signage before summer, say Roads Service

Stranocum residents who are growing tired of directing lost and confused visitors to the Dark Hedges will be dismayed to discover that “brown signs” for the famous trees won’t be erected until September - after yet another summer season.

That was the message that Moyle District councillors received at a meeting last Monday during a presentation from their Tourism department.

Cllr Joan Baird raised the subject of the lack of signage in the area, saying that directional signage was essential given how popular the area had become thanks to the TV series, Game of Thrones.

She said that “many, many times” she had been asked for directions to the Dark Hedges and added that she had even driven past the trees arouond midnight only to find tourists out taking photographs at the landmark.

Tourism department representative Kerry McGonigle told the meeting that the area had been assessed by DRD Roads Service and that brown signs would be erected in September.

However, Cllr Baird was not happy with this length of time. She added that there is now a new hotel opened just yards away from the trees which will attract even more visitors to the area.

Cllr Baird urged councillors to write to Roads Service to urge them to expedite the matter. “We should push harder on this,” she said.

It was agreed to contact Roads Service.
