No epilepsy scanner in NW

THE Western Trust currently has no EEG brain scanner - used in the diagnosis of conditions such as epilepsy - but intends establishing a service in the area and is currently in negotiations with the local health commissioner to that end.

SDLP MLA Pat Ramsey asked the Health Minister Edwin Poots how many Electroencephalography (EEG) machines were in use across the Western Health and Social Care Trust (WHSCT) and whether his Department had any plans to increase this number.

The Minister replied: “There are no Electroencephalography (EEG) machines currently in use across the Western Health and Social Care Trust. The Western Trust does, however, have plans to establish an EEG service in its area and is currently in negotiations with their local commissioner.”

EEGs measure electrical activity on the surface of the brain and are used in the diagnosis of brain conditions such as epilepsy.
