No evidence of rocket attack

MYSTERY surrounds claims of a rocket attack on a police patrol in Craigavon.

The Guardian reported on Saturday that they had been contacted by the Continuity IRA who claimed to have fired a rocket propelled grenade at a police patrol in Lake Road after midnight on Friday.

According to the Guardian the caller used a recognised codeword.

Police said they have no reports of the incident and have not found anything suspicious.

A PSNI spokesperson said: “Police in Craigavon have been made aware, through reports in the media, of a claim by a dissident group that a device was launched at officers in the Craigavon area overnight between Friday and Saturday.

“Police have no reports of this incident however we would ask members of the public to be vigilant and if anyone observes anything suspicious, unusual or out of place contact police immediately and do not touch or approach any object.

At Monday’s council meeting Mayor Alan Carson condemned the attack on police by “small-minded thugs” and expressed his concern that the rocket propelled grenade had not been found.

Sinn Fein Councillor Johnny McGibbon said: “We have to wait on the accuracy of the report to find if something happened or not.

“Nonetheless a clear message has to be sent out to the small number of people who continue to disrupt their community that this is wrong.”

The ‘MAIL’ has since learnt of the discovery of a suspected mortar bomb near the railway track at Soye’s Mill.

It’s unclear whether this device is linked to the alleged rocket attack.
