No insurance driver is given a suspended prison sentence

A 42 year old man was given a suspended prison sentence last Friday at Craigavon Magistrates Court for driving without having insurance on June 12.

Kieran McAlinden, Carrigart, Craigavon, was sentenced to three months in prison, suspended for two years, and banned from driving for 12 months.

He was also fined £60 for not displaying ‘L’ plates and £100 for driving unsupervised.

Concurrent one month driving bans were also imposed.

The court heard he was stopped on the Northway and asked to produce his documentation but failed to do so.

District Judge, Mr Mervyn Bates, pointed out that McAlinden had a number of motoring matters on his record and for his last no insurance offence he had received a three month suspended sentence.

A defence barrister said he had suffered a significant head injury which led to loss of speech.

The barrister said he had not driven since receiving the suspended sentence and had travelled to court by bicycle.
