As reported previously in the Larne Times, local councillors had hoped to see commercial freight increased on the Larne Line.

But in a letter to Larne Borough Council, Translink has said there is currently “no recognised market” for rail freight to the town and no plans for the development of a freight depot.

Mal McGreevy, general manager of rail services with Translink said: “Accommodation of freight at Larne Harbour station would require construction of a bespoke freight handling facility, rather than simple platform extension. Recent platform work has been to provide stabling facilities for the larger Class 4000 trains.”
