No rail halt for City of Derry Airport

CITY of Derry Airport does not serve anywhere near the 10million annual passengers required to qualify for a rail halt under Department of Regional Development (DRD) criteria.

DUP MLA George Robinson asked Rail Minister Conor Murphy if his Department will examine the possibilities of having

railway links and halts at Londonderry and Aldergrove airports so that "a truly integrated public transport network can be achieved."

The Minister ruled out a rail halt at Eglinton stating: "Those issues have been raised with me before. The standard benchmark for the viability of rail halts at airports is if they serve around 10 million passengers.

"I think that Aldergrove serves around seven million, and the City of Derry Airport does not serve numbers in that region at all. However, we will continue to keep that under review.

"Current and anticipated finances would not allow us to make any moves in that direction in the near future, but I will continue to listen to

that argument as time goes on."
