No sign of deal between player and Glenavon

THERE was no end to the deadlock between Glenavon and wing half Sammy Magee in August 1967.

The amateur international was refusing to hold talks with the Blues over a new deal and with the new season looming it looked increasingly likely the player had kicked his last ball for the club.

Manager Jimmy McAlinden said he had done all the running: "Up until now, I have done all the chasing. But that has finished.

"The next move is down to the player.

"If he wishes to see me then I will be glad to meet him."

Magee said he did not want to discuss the matter and said he intended to continue to train at Mourneview Park.

Glenavon, were thought to be considering letting the player go over his refusal to sign a new contract.

It was a known fact that Magee did not relish the idea of playing in the forward line and that had led to the dispute.

Magee had refused to sign because of it.

A spokesman for the club said the problem didn't exist and Magee had been promised a wing-half position.
