No upgrade for Bushmills Centre until review is held

Plans by Moyle District Council to spend around £75,000 on upgrading and enhancing Bushmills Community Centre will NOT proceed until after the results of a strategic development survey for the area are revealed.

This comes despite Cllr Sandra Hunter proposing a motion to the contrary.

At last Monday night’s meeting of Council, Cllr Hunter proposed: “That Moyle District COuncil agrees to proceed with the capital invesdtment of up to £75,000 to upgrade and enhance the facilities of Bushmills Community Centre, recognising the neeed to ensure that Moyle District Council’s legacy of work and investment in the community is carried forward into the new local government structures.”

This was seconded by Cllr William Graham.

However, both Cllr Padraig McShane and Cllr Sharon McKillop argued that the Council should hold off until the strategy is completed.

“There are poor facilities in Bushmills, “ said Cllr McKillop “but there is an opportunity for strategic development. I think spending this money would jeopardise any future development of Bushmills Community Centre.”

Cllr Robert McIlroy said it was “putting the cart before the horse” spending money on the Centre before seeing the strategic report.

A vote on the motion was taken. It failed by five votes to four, with two abstentions.
