Norman to be honoured at Burning Man Festival

LARNE adventurer Norman Surplus may be stuck in the Philippines while he waits for permission to continue his record-breaking round-the-world flight, but he is certainly making the most of his time there.

The intrepid pilot spent some time at Woodland Air Park, near Angeles City in the centre of Luzon Island, where he stayed for a couple of days as the guest of the Angeles City Flying Club.

During his stay, Norman was delighted to hear that his name is to be added to the Stanley Cup for cancer survivors. The cup is made of flammable materials, so that it can be burnt at the world famous Burning Man Festival.

The main aim of the cup is to celebrate the lives of cancer survivors and give hope to those who are dealing with it now. Norman was hospitalised with bowel cancer in 2003 and given a 40 per cent chance of survival. It is hoped that the Larne man’s fight against cancer and his incredible adventure will inspire others in their own battles with the disease.

Norman has also been spending some time courting the Press in a bid to spread the news of his expedition. He travelled 280 miles from Laoag to the Philippine capital city, Manila, to give interviews to local and international media. However, Norman didn’t make the trip by his normal mode of transport, opting instead for an exhausting 10-hour bus ride.

The 47-year-old father-of-two spent two days in the capital city before embarking on another 10-hour overnight bus journey back to his beloved gyro in Laoag. But ever optimistic, Norman described the trip as “not too bad, as I was able to curl up on a double seat and get some shut-eye”.

In other Norman-related news, an article about the Larne man published in a German magazine, Der Spiegel, has spurred on quite a bit of interest in his adventure. The article has been translated into English for all Norman’s adoring fans to enjoy, and has resulted in many new friends signing up to his Facebook page and a massive increase in people following him on Twitter.
