Normandy remembered

Alan Hamilton, chair of Carrickfergus Royal British Legion, crossed the Channel earlier this week to join colleagues at ceremonies in France.

Speaking to the TIMES about D-Day during the ‘Little Ships’ relay service in Carrick last month, Mr Hamilton said: “Quite a lot of people from here were involved in that. My own regiment, the Ulster Rifles, they landed two battalions on the one day, the only regiment in the British Army to do that, both on June 6, one by air and one by sea.

“We all hope to get together again at the end of the month, we are all going to Normandy. We go out on 3rd June and come back on the 9th, so were over there for six days.”

The pipes played during the landings by Bill Millin, Lord Lovat’s legendary piper, were brought to Carrick for the ‘Little Ships’ relay, which was also concluding in Normandy.
