North Antrim hedges scheme is taking root

MOVES to enhance north Antrim’s native hedges are ... growing.

Moyle Council’s Biodiversity Officer has been working with community groups and schools to plant new native hedgerows in a scheme which is fully funded through the Heritage Lottery Fund project, ‘Hedgerows Grow West’.

A Moyle Council report stated: ‘These hedge planting sessions have involved school children and members of the community coming together to learn why native hedges are important for our local biodiversity and how to plant and look after their new hedges.

‘So far hedge planting events have been held at St Patrick’s & St Brigid’s Primary; Ballycastle Integrated Primary and Cairns Residents Group (Cushendall) with a total of 176m of hedging being planted. It is hoped that more schools and groups will get involved next winter,’ the report added.
