Northern Ireland Comics Festival

IT'S that time of year again, when for one weekend, Londonderry opens its doors to the wonderful world of comic books!

From June 3-5, 2010, the Verbal Arts Centre will host 2D, the Northern Ireland Comics Festival and come alive in a celebration of all things comic book related, with a host of events including art and writing workshops, panel discussions, exhibitions and a massive comics open day.

The comic book genre has been constantly expanding since the days of the Beano and the Dandy. The rise of the graphic novel has ensured that everyone from a five year old, embarking on their literary journey, to a well read 70 year old, can enjoy a comic.

As with previous years, 2D 2010 will be attended by some of the world’s top comic book industry talent. This year’s guests include Pat Mills, a legend of the UK comics industry, one of the founding fathers of 2000AD and creator of acclaimed stories such as Charley’s War and Slaine among many others. Also attending will be the renowned artist Rufus Dayglo, who had worked on Tank Girl, Judge Dredd and Gorillaz, and Manga artist Ilya, whose work has appeared in publications across the globe.

Other guests include:Gary Erskine, Colin McNeil, Leigh Gallagher, Garry Leach, Steve White (Titan), Emma Vieceli, Will Simpson, Stephen Mooney, Nick Roche, Davy Francis, Bridgeen Gillespie, Phil Barrett, Meave Clacy, Stephen Downey , Joe Campbell, 2D Collective.

The Emerald Garrison, a Star Wars Costuming Club, will also be out in force on Saturday 5th June at the Verbal Arts Centre. Their presence is sure to create an atmosphere that is out of this world!

So if you enjoy graphic novels - or even if you just want to meet a real life Star Wars Stormtrooper, this is the place for you in June!

The festival is the only event of its kind in Northern Ireland and is completely free to all members of the public. 2D – Northern Ireland Comics Festival is a must in the diary of any comic book fan or anyone who enjoys a fun day out!
