Northern Trust goes green

THE Northern Trust has introduced recycling points for patients and visitors to the Causeway Hospital as part of its Waste Management Strategy.

Cara Browne has been appointed as Recycling Manager for the Trust. She will develop recycling projects to reduce the amount of domestic waste the Trust sends to landfill and to reduce the impact on the environment.

Cara said: “As Recycling Manager my job is to ensure that the Trust complies with legislation and that we reduce our impact on the environment in a cost-effective way. The past ten years has seen unprecedented and rapid change in waste management policy and practice.

“Waste has a great impact on our environment through pollution, by threatening our biodiversity and depleting the planets natural resources. In total, UK households throw away 26.8 million tonnes of rubbish a year, that’s equivalent to each of us throwing away half a tonne.

“If you are a visitor to the hospital you can recycle tin cans in the hospital restaurant and coffee bar. These are collected by the charity group CanCan for recycling.

“Recently a clothes bank has been placed near the entrance of A&E for anyone wanting to recycle their old clothes. Spent toner cartridges and batteries are also collected and recycled from the wards and departments as well as cardboard which is baled and sent for recycling.”
