Not bad for a 24-year-old

DUP candidate Gary Middleton thanked voters, activists and party colleagues who helped boost the party’s total and share of the vote despite a reduced turnout in Foyle quipping that it “wasn’t too bad for a 24-year-old.”

“Can I first thank my incomparable and successful team who delivered an increase in our share that puts us in good stead for the elections to the Assembly next year,” he said.

Mr Middleton finished third polling 4,573, improving on Maurice Devenney’s 4,489 tally from 2010 and well ahead of the nearest unionist, Julia Kee of the UUP.

“The Democratic Unionist Party are the clear voice of unionism in this city,” he said.

“Thanks to everyone who voted for us as well and I look forward now to the Assembly campaign and can I just say, of course, it’s not too bad for a 24-year-old,” he joked.
