Against the background of recent statistics released by ICO (Information Commissioners Office) & OFCOM ‘Ofcom estimates that each year UK consumers receive around 4.8 billion nuisance calls: 1.7 billion live sales calls, 1.5 billion silent calls, 940 million recorded sales messages, and 200 million abandoned calls’.

A recipient of such unwanted sales calls and messages (both live and recorded) Ms Rose Johnston, Church View Dervock, contacted the Handyman Service, from Causeway Older Active Strategic Team (COAST) to avail of their recent scheme. Funded by Causeway Coast and Glens PCSP, the scheme aims to supply keysafes and the nuisance call blocker system, ‘TrueCall’.

Jenna O’Hara (C.O.A.S.T. Project Manager), explained: “After speaking to many older people across the Causeway Coast and Glens we realised that many were plagued by nuisance phone calls and we are now in the position to offer trueCall that will prevent them.”

Frankie Cunningham, Chairperson Building Communities Resource Centre added: “The Handyman Service, from Causeway Older Active Strategic Team (COAST), also offers low level maintenance tasks around the homes of people aged 60 plus across the Causeway Coast and Glens to help prevent falls, trips and hazards. The aim is to provide simple and preventative support, ultimately providing that little bit of practical assistance that makes an impact on the life of the older person and help to maintain their independence. Some of our most popular jobs include power washing slippery paths, changing light bulbs, fitting carbon monoxide alarms and fixing cupboard doors. I would encourage those organisations, groups and individuals working with older people across the Causeway Coast and Glens to take advantage of this scheme.”
