Number of burglaries are investigated

Detectives in E and F Districts are investigating a number of burglaries in the Armagh, Down, Dungannon and South Tyrone areas in recent weeks have made an appeal for witnesses to come forward.

Police would like to hear from anyone who noticed anything suspicious in and around these areas and are also keen to hear from anyone who noticed any suspicous vehicles, particularly during weekdays.

Police are asking householders to be aware of suspicious activity in their area. Have you noticed any unknown callers to addresses in your area or people checking properties especially when the property was empty?

Police are also keen to hear from anyone who noticed suspicious cars in their area or unusual activity.

Police are particularly keen that the public alert police to any unusual activity so this can be acted upon immediately. Any piece of information is important regardless of how insignificant you think it may be. If you see a car parked in your area, which wouldn’t normally be there, or if someone calls to your door and their reason for doing so seems suspicious, call the police who will act upon this information.

It is understood homes have been targetted during daylight hours and police would urge householders to adopt a few simple crime prevention measures. It may seem like an obvious action but make sure all doors are locked and windows closed before leaving your home or retiring for the night.

Car keys and handbags should never be left close to doors, windows or kept in cars, especially at night. Avoid keeping large amounts of expensive jewellery in a jewellery box. Only use a jewellery box for less expensive or costume jewellery and keep other items in less obvious locations or locked away in a safe.

Make sure your outside alarm box is fitted high up on the wall of the house and out of reach. If disconnected, the alarm will only sound inside the property therefore neighbours or anyone passing by may not be alerted to what is happening inside.

A thorough investigation is ongoing. However, community knowledge is also a great tool – if you see someone acting suspicious around a neighbour’s property please let police know immediately.

Anyone with information should contact Police on the new non-emergency number 101. Or, if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details, they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.

For further advice on protecting your home contact your local Crime Prevention Officer on 101.
