Number of road deaths in Moyle is up

Chief Inspector Brenda Cairns Area Commander Moyle explained: “Unfortunately this year the number of injury collisions has increased. There was also the tragic death on the Moyarget Road on the 3rd July 2012 involving a local man and Spanish tourists. These incidents should always remind us of the terrible consequences that bad driving can have on families. This accident is still under investigation.

“The majority of collisions are down to careless driving and result in only slight injuries, but unfortunately from our experience the difference between slight injury and a fatality can be very small.

“Local police still work closely with Roads Policing and Roads Service to make our roads safer through engineering processes however at times this process can be slow.

“Local police are also involved in the education of our drivers to improve their driving skills; this is done through our work in the schools, through Top Gear events run by Sergeant Armour and through events run for schools by our Road Policing colleagues. Advice is also given on a daily basis to drivers using the roads.

“At times we must resort to prosecution, whether through fixed penalty notices for speeding, use of mobile phone or no seat belt or prosecution of drivers for careless and dangerous driving in more serious circumstances.

“We also identify areas that anti-social motoring occurs and in partnership with other internal and external there have been prosecutions for dangerous driving and unroadworthy or modified vehicles. Vehicles have also been seized for no insurance, and this process and pro-active operations will continue,” she added.
