Nuns withdraw hostel offer for Dungannon man accused of flogging his girlfriend

A group of nuns who run a bail hostel in Armagh have withdrawn their permission to accept an African man who is alleged to have flogged his girlfriend with a computer cable, along with a string of other brutal domestic violence charges.

Mamadu Saido Djalo (22) from Scotch Street, Dungannon has been remanded in custody since earlier this month having been refused bail after his arrest and latterly at high court.

He faces a total of 19 charges ranging in dates, with six allegedly occurring between July 24 and 31, and the remainder between September 25 and 29.

These include three counts of false and injurious imprisonment, six counts of causing actual bodily harm, and one of grievous bodily harm, all against Djalo’s girlfriend.

He is accused of stealing her bank cards, a total of £320 cash, as well as her lap-top and driving licence. There are further charges of damaging the victim’s mobile phone, making threats to kill her parents and possessing an offensive weapon.

Following a discussion with police, the nuns decided to withdraw the placement. With no further address available at present, District Judge John Meehan refused bail and the defence accepted they would be required to return the matter to high court for further consideration. The case is due for an update on the progress of the investigation on November 11
