NW can becentre ofrespect andtolerance

The first Mayor of the new Derry and Strabane supercouncil, Elisha McCallion, says Londonderry was once “a byword for discrimination” but is now “a centre of respect and tolerance” and has vowed that her tenure will be marked by further progress.

Speaking after her appointment on Thursday she said: “I will seek to promote partnership-working, respect, inclusive politics and equality. While the geography may be different, there is one thing that is constant right across the new council area – its people.

“New council arrangements will require new relationships. These new relationships must build on the historical connections between Derry and Strabane, and new relationships between our communities.

“We have led the way in this city in demonstrating what can be achieved through new relationships. Derry, once a byword for discrimination, is now recognised and celebrated internationally as a centre of respect and tolerance.”
