NW DUP vows to backRectory residents

DUP MLA Gary Middleton has vowed to support and assist the elderly residents of the Rectory Field home in the Waterside even if that means opposing party colleague Simon Hamilton, who as Health Minister may ultimately have to sign off on the facility’s closure.

Last week health union Unison claimed the ongoing consultation on the proposed closure of the Rectory Field and William Street care homes was being viewed as a mere box-ticking excercise by the Western Trust and that the health authority has already earmarked the cityside facility for alternative use.

Mr Middleton urged members of the public to respond to the consultation on Proposed Changes to the Provision of Statutory Residential Care for Older People.

“The consultation which was launched last Friday, August 7, will close in 12 weeks time. Within the document it outlines a number of proposals, including the proposed changes at the Rectory Field home in the Waterside,” he said.

“Myself and my Waterside councillor colleagues have recently visited Rectory Field to assure them of our support and assistance. I have also spoken to the Western Trust who have assured me that current residents will be able to live in their current home for as long as they may wish as long as it continues to safely meet their needs.

“I would encourage everyone to get their responses in as soon as possible and contribute their views.
