NW needs specialstroke instructor, says Cllr Reilly

Councillor Martin Reilly has called for the appointment of a Level 4 Exercise and Fitness Training Instructor for people in Londonderry and Strabane who have been affected by a stroke.

He said that patients recovering from a stroke need all the assistance they can receive.

“Exercise following a stroke has been proven to aid rehabilitation and help sufferers to feel better within themselves,” said Mr Reilly.

“I was disappointed to learn from a constituent affected by a stroke that leisure centres in both Derry and Strabane do not as yet have a British Association for Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation (BACPR) level 4 trained specialist exercise and fitness training instructor.

“Indeed, the nearest leisure centre with such a qualified person is in Limavady,” the Waterside Councillor said.

“Given the reorganisation of functions due to the amalgamation of Derry and Strabane Councils there is now an opportunity to address this shortfall.”

He said he would fight to ensure specialised supervision becomes available on Londonderry doorsteps.
