NW women to share conflict stories in bid for a better furture

WOMEN from across the North West will gather at the Waterfoot Hotel in Londonderry next Thursday to talk openly and honestly about their experiences of conflict and discuss how best to create a shared future for the next generation.

The event will be organised by the Gateway to Protestant Participation (GPP) - an EU Peace III funded programme designed to encourage Protestants from Londonderry, Strabane, Omagh and Donegal get involved in civic life - and is aimed especially at those from disadvantaged areas.

The "Creating a Shared Future" event will take place in the recently refurbished Waterfoot on January 20 and will recognise the strong role women played helping create peace in the province.

GPP decided to organise the event after being approached by a number of individuals and groups.

The guest speakers include Catherine Cooke, Ruth Moore, Mo Durkan, Mildred Garfield, Denise Devlin and Aideen McGinley plus others from across the political, business, cultural, community and family spheres.

The organisers say the event will give women a voice to share their experiences of what we have and what we can achieve in helping to create a shared future for all.

Julia Kee, Project Outreach Worker at GPP explained: "The aim of the event is to bring together woman from the North West to share their stories and experiences of the past conflict and our shared transformation to Peace.

"These intimate and informal conversations are more beneficial and give all women a greater opportunity to have a voice, as well as talking openly and honestly about their individual experiences and their role in creating a shared future free of conflict for the next generation."

Willie Lamrock, General Secretary of Londonderry YMCA said: "This networking event will give Protestant women and women's groups an opportunity to come together and discuss what a shared society means to them, how Protestant women can become involved in working towards a shared future and what benefits it will have for those who get involved. "Our speakers have been chosen to give views from those who have been working in cross community projects, giving participants a wide range of perspectives to consider and discuss throughout the evening.

"The networking event begins at 7pm, tea and a light buffet will be provided to all participants.

"If you are interested in attending then contact Lisa at the Londonderry YMCA on 7130 1662 to secure your place." Anyone wishing to attend or requiring further information can also contact Julia Kee on 07719286375.
