NWRC refurb not affected by DEL funding cubacks

A HUGE development at the Strand Road campus of the North West Regional Campus is the only ongoing capital investment project funded by the Department of Employment and Learning (DEL) in Londonderry.

The ongoing NWRC extension and refurbishment is one of twelve current projects funded by the Department and will not be affected by DEL cutbacks.

Five more capital projects due to commence in 2010/11 are also listed but none of these are in the North West.

Employment and Learning Minister Sir Reg Empey explained the five further projects slated for commencement could be affected by a reduction in state funding.

"A further five projects had been planned, one in each of the four higher education institutions and one in further education. These will now be impacted due to the proposed reduction in Department for Employment and Learning's 2010/11 capital funding," he stated.

"In higher education the Institutions have yet to decide if their four projects, which are partly funded by DEL, could proceed at the proposed reduced level of DEL funding," he added.

He said that until the institutions in question - QUB, UU, Stranmillis and St Mary's - have taken this decision he could not say whether they would be postponed or abandoned. Sir Reg outlined the details in response to a query tabled at the Stormont Assembly.
