NWRC students enjoy trip

STUDENTS from the Countryside and Fisheries Management course at North West Regional College recently got to see theory in practice as they visited various sites throughout Inishowen as part of an educational study tour.

The group, who are undertaking the part-time National Certificate course, visited the Doagh Famine Village, Fort Dunree and the Maritime Musuem and Planetarium, during their tour.

Course Co-ordinator Dr Declan Lawlor stated that “the students particularly enjoyed the boat excursion to Inishtrahull, Ireland’s most northerly island. We witnessed the Basking shark tagging programme and were delighted to observe many of these magnificent creatures in the waters around our boats”.

On the island, local Conservation Ranger Emmett Johnson joined the group to give an informative talk on conservation management. Dr Lawlor and course lecturer Andy Sides arranged the study to provide a practical insight for the students.

“Along with the knowledge and awareness gained through undertaking the course, such insights into practical conservation are required for successful careers in the land-based sector,” added Dr Lawlor.

The National Certificate in Countryside and Fisheries Management course is delivered over two years part-time, one afternoon per week. The next course start date is 15th September 2010.
