Oakgrove pupils launch green revolution

GREEN-FINGERED pupils, parents and staff at Oakgrove Nursery and Primary School planting flowers and vegetable seeds and bulbs during Green School Revolution week.

The team also planted a wild flower patch in our science garden.

It is hoped this will attract bees and increase biodiversity.

Indoors the children have been measuring radiators in order to install reflective sheeting and therefore cut down on heating bills.

Mrs Crawford the school’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) advisor has been helping with this.

“There are already some blue tits nesting in the nesting boxes which were assembled, painted and erected by our eco-club,” explained Mrs Crawford.

“We also had an exciting Riverwatch visit from Michael in the Lough’s Agency who brought some river samples and star fish for the children to see. In April P6 and P7 will visit the Lough’s Agency.

“In early March we held a ‘Bike it’ initiative where children brought their bikes to school to be repaired by Brian from Claudy Cycles.

“The following week P4, P5, P6, and P7 children cycled across the Peace Bridge and along the river. This was great fun and has encouraged children and staff to cycle and walk more often,” she said.
