Funeral details for IFA referee Richard Scott who died in accident at work with NIE

Funeral details have been released for a popular NIE Networks employee who died in an accident at a substation yesterday.

It is understood the man who died was Richard Scott (pictured) from Shandon Park, Castledawson, who was also an accomplished football referee.

Paul Stapleton, managing director at NIE Networks, said: “It is with great sadness that we confirm an incident at Drumnakelly Main Substation this morning (Wednesday} resulted in the fatality of one of our colleagues.

“The family of the employee has been informed and our deepest sympathies are with them at this incredibly difficult time. An investigation by both NIE Networks and the Health and Safety Executive is under way into the circumstances of the incident.”

The head of refereeing with the Irish Football Association, Trevor Moutray, also paid tribute to Mr Scott.

“Richard was an experienced assistant referee, who officiated in the Premier Intermediate League and the Championship,” he said.

“He gave a number of loyal years to refereeing and will be sorely missed across the refereeing community. Our thoughts and prayers go to his family at this difficult time.”

A funeral notice said that Mr Scott died suddenly as a result of an accident.

The notice said he was the son of June and Harold, brother of Cherith and Jordan, brother-in-law of David and Zara, grandson of Elizabeth and uncle of Tyler, Kai and Grayson.

House and funeral strictly private due to government guidelines.

Funeral service in his home on Sunday, August 23 at 2:30pm (family and friends are welcome to listen to the service outside his home whilst adhering to social distancing), followed by burial in Polepatrick Cemetery, Magherafelt.
