John Doone - the passing of a real gentleman

A GENTLE giant and a real gentleman is how John Doone will be remembered by his family, friends and colleagues.

Mr Doone, who lived at Pinebank in Lurgan, passed away on March 30 after a short illness.

A family man, John was born on August 10, 1948, at The Rock, Stoneyford. John’s father Joe owned a mobile butcher’s shop and John often helped his father, being the oldest boy, and got to know many people in the area.

In 1969 he married Irene Moore and moved to Craigavon close to where he had been working in Goodyear - a job he started in 1967.

John, with his wife Irene, had three children, Maureen, Jayne and Adrian. He also has six grandchildren whom he described as his six shining stars.

John lived for his family and had a great relationship, his entire family becoming like a brother and son to the Moore family. For John, his family always came first.

And in 1975 he finally got to do what he loved, driving, and started his own haulage business.

He became one of the founder members of Drumgor Bowling Club in 1970, an organisation he was committed to for the rest of his life. He was appointed Chairman and worked tirelessly to make the club a success.

His colleagues at the Club Brendan Beattie and Brian Brown said: “John will be sadly missed for he was one of ‘life’s true gentlemen’ and because he always saw the good in everyone.

“He will be sadly missed by all his friends at Drumgor BC.”

John was a well known and active member of society and held a variety of posts including President of Lurgan Bowling Club in 2003. John was also a member of Edenmore Golf Club and enjoyed playing golf in Portugal with friends.

Mr Doone is survived by his beloved wife Irene, his three children Maureen, Jayne and Adrian, his son-in-laws John and John and his daughter-in-law Ann-Marie. He was a loving grandad to James, Katie, Sarah-Jane, Anna, Olivia and Evan. He is also survived by his mother Mary, brothers Joe, Jimmy, Christie, Brian, sisters Josephine, Mary, Nell, Amanda, Lorna, Patricia, sister-in-laws, brother-in-laws, nieces and nephews.

His funeral took place on Sunday, April 1, from his late residence to St Anthony’s Church, Craigavon for Requiem Mass.

Interment was held afterwards in St John’s Cemetery, Lylo.
