Post mistress passes away

WELL known and respected member of Ballievey Women’s Institute, Ellen Elizabeth Mayne (nee Martin), passed away recently at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast.

Betty, as she was affectionately known, died on March 6 and her funeral took place from her former home at 91 Knockgorm Road to Magherally Presbyterian Church for a service and interment in the adjoining burial ground.

The dearly loved wife of Boyd and devoted mother of Denise, Andrea and Martin, Betty started her working life in Preston’s (now known as Downshire Camping) before moving to the Optical Factory in Lurgan.

After her marriage she lived initially in Ballydown before moving to Garvaghy Post Office in 1969 where she ran the shop and post office until her death.

A keen member of the WI, Betty held various posts within the organisation, including treasurer.

For the past six years she and Boyd enjoyed visiting various parts of Northern Ireland in their motorhome.

Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to John Gamble, funeral director, 7 Meeting Street, Dromore BT25 1AQ for Macmillan Cancer Support and Ward 6c at the Royal Victoria Hospital. Cheques can be made payable to John Gamble.
