Tributes paidto the lateGeorge Wilton

George was well known in sporting circles, in particular with Rathfriland FC and Banbridge Town FC.

Rathfriland’s press officer, Eric Annett, paid the following tribute:

“George originally, who came from north Belfast but lived in Banbridge and whose working career took him to being a bank manager in Rathfriland, always unashamedly hailed the people of Rathfriland as the best in the world!

“It was during this time that he got connected with Rathfriland FC in the late 70s and indeed served on the committee for a number of years.

“George was always one of Rathfriland FC’s biggest supporters and it was not until recent times that his health prevented him from attending games - he loved nothing more than the supporters’ bus lifting him in Banbridge for an away game and a bit of craic with his friends from the club.

“For years George also served Rathfriland by travelling every fortnight to Belfast to attend the Amateur League fixture meetings and regularly sold club tickets with a smile.

“He was always one to love listening to a joke and was equally at home telling them!

“George was Rathfriland FC through and through and not afraid to say it while his warm and welcoming character made him a lot of real good friends in and around the club.

“He will be sorely missed.”

Meanwhile a statement Banbridge Town said, “It is with much regret that the committee, players and supporters of Banbridge Town Football Club learn of the death of lifelong supporter and former committee member George Wilton and pass their deepest sympathy to all family members.”

George passed away on July 31 at Craigavon Area Hospital. His funeral took place yesterday (Monday) at Scarva Street Presbyterian Church and was followed by interment in Carnmoney Cemetery.

He leaves behind his wife, Linda; sons Steven, Colin, David and Mark; and daughters Elaine and Kare.
