Worked as mechanic in town businesses

MR Richard Carter Bell, known to everyone as Carter, died suddenly on the evening of April 24 this year after a period of failing health. He was 75.

He is survived by his wife June, daughters Sandra (Armagh), Daphne (USA) and Gillian (Larne), and grandchildren Jonathan and Rebecca, son-in-law Paul and sadly was pre-deceased by his other son-in-law, Stephen McLoughlin, in August 2001. Carter was the one of two siblings of Alfred and Cissie Bell, Lurgan and is survived by his sister Ena who lives in Moira.

Carter was born on April 8, 1935 and attended The Model School in Lurgan and then Lurgan Technical College before starting his working life as a mechanic with the Ulster Transport Association.

He later moved to work in Roadside Motors, Dollingstown, and then Wesley Turkington’s garage in Lurgan.

He moved to work with Norman Emerson and Sons, Derryadd, before taking up post with the Northern Ireland Electricity Board where he progressed from mechanic to garage foreman.

Having taken early retirement, Carter loved nothing more than spending time working in the large family garden or pursuing his hobbies of wood turning and restoring vintage cars which showed the talent and ability he had working with his hands and many people were able to draw from his wealth of knowledge.

Carter looked forwarded to his holidays, family weekends and the summer break at their caravan in Groomsport and later with his wife June in their motor home, touring Great Britain and Ireland (on one occasion France) and in recent years relaxing at the coast in Portrush.

The funeral service was conducted in the family home by Mr Norrie Emerson, assisted by Mr Roy Reynolds. Burial was in Lurgan Cemetery and refreshments were served in Knocknamuckley Church Hall.
