THE local golfing fraternity was saddened by the recent death of Henry McQuillan.

Mr McQuillan was a long-time member of Ballymena Golf Club, where he held the position of Captain in 2005.

Coming from a family whose name is synonymous with the Raceview club, his father Shenny was club secretary for many years, sister Paddy Fox is a former Lady Captain, while his sons Felix and Cormac are also members at Raceview, along with grandson Dermot McElroy, one of the Province’s leading amateur players.

As well as being a useful player - he was member of Ballymena’s Ulster Cup team - Henry was also heavily involved in club activities off the course as a member of the club’s council.

“Henry was the type of person who always had the club at heart,” said Ballymena Golf Club’s press officer Jimmy McCloy.

“He was a keen all-round sportsman, a very good darts player and he also played indoor bowls for the Golf Club.

“His own sons carried on the family tradition at Raceview and in recent years, he also took particular pleasure in Dermot’s emergence as a top player.

“It was Henry who effectively started Dermot off playing when he was no age and taking him to tournaments and he was very proud of Dermot’s achievements,” added Jimmy.
